Asaka Zuri Print
Name Meaning: Japanese for ‘beautiful death’ and Swahili for ‘beautiful’.
Asaka has had a unique upbringing; her Japanese mother and Kenyan father often blended their cultures in the home. Asaka was born a boy; she underwent the transition process when she turned 18 and with support from her mother, but not from her father. Her gender change brought contention to her parents' marriage, and as a result, her mother would divorce her father when she was 15 and raise her on her own. Asaka always felt like she never fit in, even after graduating high school with high marks and attending the University of Pennsylvania, where she quickly made new connections on campus.
It wasn’t until 2 years into her studies that her true calling would come. One night, as she attended a party off campus, a group of vampires attacked her and some of her friends on their way home, killing some and nearly killing her before Serena and Aly appeared to kill them. After the memories of her surviving friends were wiped, Asaka proved resilient to mind control and expressed a desire to learn more about what had happened that night. With the permission of the Council, Alessandra educated Asaka on the Reaper order and supernatural threat, and soon after, Asaka underwent the training to become a Reaper Foundling Initiate, under the care of Alessandra and Chris. With Asaka’s inherent strength and mental resistance, she excelled in her training and became a full-fledged Reaper Hunter at 23, specializing in daggers, and is often assigned with Aly when out hunting. To her mother, she is in a specialized program with the military, and to her friends, she is taking time away from her studies to travel abroad.
Asaka is now committed to the Reaper cause, seeking revenge on any vampire that preys on the innocent. Her extreme views of killing vampires often put her in conflict with Aly when they are on missions together, but despite their differences, Asaka counts Aly as one of her closest friends in the Reaper order, feeling a debt of gratitude for saving her life and giving her purpose. She keeps in regular contact with her mother, though her father is rarely in the picture.
