She is the younger sister of Rai, and their family is of Japanese descent. Their grandparents had moved to America after the 2nd World War. She was born and raised there, but found life difficult with her abilities being so potent and destructive. Her brother, working with both human and supernatural judicial systems, led him to cross paths with the Brotherhood many times, which has developed a friendship with some of its members. This relationship opened the door for Akari to spend more time with other supernatural creatures, eventually taking on freelance work in the underworld, utilising her powerful gifts as a Kitsune with lightning powers.
